Line
sensors will replace line judges
LINE JUDGING
The future
of line judging in sports like
volleyball and tennis will be challenged
by the demand for accurate judging and
the need to respect any pandemic
protocols.
HISTORIC EXAMPLE
Previously
referees and technical officials have
relied heavily on the third eye that the
line judges bring to the two sports with
the aim to deliver fair play and a close
to accurate judgement in order to
produce the deserved winner(s) of every
competition.
WHICH POPULAR SERVICE WILL FADE OUT
The
presence of 4 line judges (to assist the
referees) on each side of the courts,
which in some cases has received its
fair share of controversy and brought
the games of volleyball and tennis into
disrepute, will start to fade out.
Borrowing from the now famous “goal line
technology” and taking into account the
impact of the Covid-19 pandemic to
sport, having men and women standing by
the lines for the entire duration of the
match will start to be a thing of the
past. Delays and the use of replays when
trying to establish the most accurate
call whenever the ball is said to be out
or in will also fade out. Spectator
disgruntlement and the any accusations
of favouritism will fade out.
WHAT NEW SERVICE WILL FADE IN
The use of line sensors
connected to a public
monitor will see the calls
for the correct decision
displayed for referees to
make the final call and the
spectators to be informed
and made aware of the
decision. Players too will
be equally informed and will
not accuse the match
officials of any favouritism.

The
manufacturing of both tennis and
volleyball balls with an electronic chip
that communicates with the line sensors
will fade in. Only ball retrievers will
remain so that they take away stray
balls that may cause injuries to the
players and technical staff alike.
Lastly,
another service that will fade in will
be the monitoring of the efficiency and
consistency in the function of the
sensors and the correct readings which
will be done by two technicians (one on
each side of the court). This role will
replace the 8 line judges with 2
technicians. |
